9th Grade goes to Camp Daggett!
Principal Fehrenbach’s Weekly Message
San Francisco
Dear LPS families,
It was a great week here at school. We had multiple groups head to camps around the state, the PM car line finished by 3:20 on Wednesday, and our PTO launched the year with their first meeting... September is in full swing!
I wanted to take a minute this week to introduce myself to our community on a more personal level. I am a Leland graduate and attended LPS K-12, as well as the Leelanau Children’s Center before that. My time here as a student is a huge part of who I ultimately became as an educator, with LPS being the place I first learned how to work hard at things that really matter, building deep connections with others along the way. I am so thankful for this opportunity to be here!
I live just south of Suttons Bay with my family: my husband, Jordan, and our three daughters. Norah is 13 and in 8th grade, Claire is 11 and in 7th grade, and Zoe is 7 and in 2nd grade. All three attend Suttons Bay, our home district. They love that our county-wide connections are growing with me back here at Leland! We love to spend time together enjoying Leelanau County, especially at the beach or just hanging out at home. We also love to travel! This year, we’ve seen both coasts, with a trip to New York City in February and a trip to the West Coast in July.
As an educator, I am deeply curious and passionate about the work of teaching and learning. I love to see that magical moment when a student has pushed through something intensely challenging and has reached a new level of understanding. I believe that adults support students best when we remove equity barriers while still holding high expectations for personal growth. I want our students to know that our community loves and supports every one of them, while also encouraging them to take on big, exciting challenges independently. There is so much reward for both adults and kids when we witness that real success!
Thank you all so much for the warm welcome you’ve given me so far. I can’t wait to see what our school community accomplishes together this year! As always, if you need anything from me throughout the year, please reach out: sfehrenbach@lelandschool.com or (231) 256-3802.

The Leland PTO is gearing up for our 2024 Fall Social event and we are seeking sponsors and
donations. Last year, generous donations from our community allowed the PTO to host this fun
event at no cost for our attendees. If you would like to be involved in this year’s event by joining
the planning committee, or with a monetary sponsorship or an in-kind donation of food, drinks,
decorations, or entertainment, please email Jamie Mork at Jamie.L.Mork@gmail.com.

LPS 2023-24 Yearbooks are now available for $20!
They can be reserved by emailing rknudsen@lelandschool.com and can be picked up in the main office.
Be sure to come to school with cash on Tuesday if you want to shop.
This Tuesday
Tech forms for Little Women are now available outside Mrs. Newman's door. They are due back by Sept. 18th :)
In search of: a DONATION of school-appropriate magazines (please scan before sending in) and other scrap/used materials like wallpaper or textured material for a hands-on activity in ELA 8.
For context: As we read Kwame Alexander’s The Crossover, we explore the power and poetics of storytelling. We analyze “the story” being told by Romare Bearden’s famous art collage titled The Block (1971). I would like students to create their own collage of their own neighborhood or stomping grounds to accompany their writing pieces.
Thank you kindly,
- Mrs. Vann

Also, the book return that was up there has been moved to just outside the HS library (east hallway) so anyone can return books while the library is closed.
