Next week is a busy one here at LPS! I want to make sure you’re aware of some special events happening next week. Please check out the information below and share any fliers with friends who need the information!

Tuesday evening, 5:30 pm: Information Night for Prospective Families
If you have friends or family interested in enrolling at LPS, please spread the word! 

Wednesday: Superintendent Candidate Ryan Huppert visits
Parents, join Dr. Huppert from 2:30-3:30 at school for a meet-and-greet.
Dr. Huppert’s in-person interview will take place in the Library at 5:00 pm.

Thursday: Kindergarten Signing Day
This fun and informational all-day event is for incoming Kindergarten families. These students and families will visit the kindergarten classrooms and complete kindergarten enrollment tasks. Our future Comets have a chance to “sign” as kindergarteners at a cute photo opportunity!
Reminder, we have no school for current kindergarten students this day!

Transition meetings for 5th, 8th, and 11th grade families also happen this evening.

Friday: Día del niño and Literacy Night, 3:30-5:30 pm
This fun family event is a wonderful chance to celebrate children! El día del niño is celebrated worldwide at different times of the year, but we honor our LPS Latino students by sharing in celebration with Mexico on April 30th. Join us!

Middle School also has a dance Friday evening from 6-8 pm.

National Honor Society Induction Ceremony Leland Public School proudly welcomed its newest members into the National Honor Society during a special induction ceremony. These students were recognized for their outstanding scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Congratulations to all!

Prom 2025 Leelanau County Prom is coming up soon! It will be held at the Leelanau Sands Casino from 8 -11pm. See Mrs. Zywicki for tickets.

Superintendent Candidate Open House The Leland School Board of Education is pleased to announce they have scheduled interview activities for their finalist in the search for a next Superintendent of Schools.

Ryan Huppert, who will defend his Doctoral Dissertation at Harvard University this next week, will return to Leland on April 23rd. He will spend much of the day meeting with students and staff in the school prior to a community open house and formal interview.

Mr. Huppert has over 20 years in public education including several years leading the prestigious Grand Rapids City High School, a magnet and International Baccalaureate program, from which he was selected to the Harvard fellowship.

Members of the community are welcome and encouraged to attend the open house (2:30pm-3:30pm) and formal interview (5:00 pm) at Leland Public School. 

 Introducing Popcorn Fridays! Leland Public School is excited to kick off a brand-new tradition—Popcorn Fridays! Starting Friday, April 18th, every student will receive a free bag of popcorn as they head out the door at the end of the school day. It’s our way of saying “You’re awesome!” and “Have a great weekend!”

This is a completely free treat for students—just a little surprise to celebrate our incredible kids and school community. The first Popcorn Friday is proudly sponsored by the Leland PTO, and we can’t wait to see those smiling faces!

Back in the summer we asked for your input regarding our cell phone policy, and we made some revisions to our policy that we implemented this year. We also partnered with our PTO to facilitate a book study around the text, The Anxious Generation, by Jonathan Haidt in order to continue our learning and refine our beliefs and policies around cell phones at school.

Please take a moment to complete this survey regarding our cell phone policies and to share your thoughts around the role they play here at school. We will take your input back to our school improvement team to review and continue our work around crafting a policy that best serves our students and their learning here at LPS.

The Belle of Amherst: A One-Woman Play

Bringing poetry to life, Sara Hartley performs as Emily Dickinson in William Luce’s classic play, making use of Dickinson's work, diaries, and letters to recollect her encounters with the significant people in her life. Playgoers will be treated to tea or coffee along with a tasting of Emily Dickinson's Black Cake.

Jon Muq in Concert

Jon Muq, a singer-songwriter born in Uganda and now living in Austin, Texas, draws from African as well as western musical trends and traditions. Featured on the PBS News Hour, Muq devises songs as small gifts, designed to settle into everyday life and provoke reflection and resilience.

Six Mile Strings in Concert

Saturday, June 28, 7-8:30 p.m. (Doors open at 6:30)

$25 OAB Members | $30 Non-Members

Visiting from Detroit, Yuri Popowcyz, Natalie Frakes, Alycia Wilder, and Tom Sullivan are a string quartet of friends who focus on performing classical and contemporary works. This will be the ensemble’s third concert at the OAB, which they describe as offering “a unique kind of magic that brings the audience closer, both physically and emotionally.”

The Learning in the Arts Mentorship Program (LAMP) at the Glen Arbor Arts Center is a hands-on, paid mentorship for individuals ages 16–22 who want to explore arts education, administration, and creative leadership. Participants will gain real-world experience, connect with local artists and arts professionals, and receive a $500 stipend upon completion.
