Dear LPS families,

Well, winter has ARRIVED in full force! I hope this week’s snow days brought some joy and relaxation to your families despite their inherent disruption to schedules. 

Now that we are once again driving and playing at recess in a snow globe, remember that all students should arrive prepared for cold weather daily. For elementary students, that means coats, snow pants, gloves/mittens, hats, and boots. Our elementary students go out for at least 40 minutes daily, often more. We will only stay indoors for recess if the windchill is below 0 degrees. 

Secondary students should be prepared for the outdoors with at least coats and appropriate footwear, but middle and high school students both have opportunities for outdoor time throughout the week and could bring much more gear to fully enjoy the snow. 

I hope to see our LPS families around the community this weekend, especially since we missed so much time together this week! 

Here are some events on my calendar this weekend:

We have many students in the Leelanau Children’s Choir/Youth Ensemble, and their Madrigal Concert is Friday at 7 pm at the Leland Methodist Church.

Saturday we have both LEGO League Robotics and Santa’s Workshop at school. Robotics begins in the morning and runs all day, and Santa’s Workshop is from 2-5. 

Our Elementary Basketball girls play throughout the day at Suttons Bay on Saturday too: 3rd graders at 9:45 and 11:15, and 4th/5th at 12:00 and 1:30. 

Next week looks like we can expect much fairer weather, and I'm looking forward to being back at school with everyone!

"We took a windy walk down to the Leland Fire Station last week.  We were able to learn about and see what tools they use to put out a fire-ladders, hoses, saws and even a night vision device used to see through the smoke. We also got to see the inside of a fire truck and their new ambulance with all of the important medical equipment needed at an emergency.  The part they were most excited about was seeing where they “live” when on call-including bedrooms, a bathroom and a kitchen. They were very inquisitive and asked lots of good questions!" - Mrs. Osorio

Mrs. Zywicki's Science Class's salmon eggs have hatched!
They will remain in this stage for the next couple of weeks. The class is welcoming K-12 classroom visitors to drop by and check in as the salmon develop!

Spy School has come to an end, but the skills the kids have learned will continue!
Walking quietly throughout the school, so we don’t disrupt others’ learning, remains the goal.

Although all the classes did a fantastic job, Mrs. Wheeler’s 3/4 class won the "Candy Salad" by collecting the most beads.

A Friendly Reminder
Statistically, the likelihood of lice cases tends to increase during the winter months! The Comet Clinic wants to remind K-12 students of these 10 steps to follow in the instance of dealing with a case of head lice.

In gratitude to ASEA Central Education Foundation (ASEA-CEF), a nonprofit corporation in the State of Michigan, the Leland Gliders Ski Club has received $1000.00 to purchase more skis for the ski fleet. Please note some skis will arrive later in December or early January. 

Ski fitting will happen at school during student advisory or recess time. This will be first come first serve from registration commitment beginning December 9th. Please see Coach Kirt in the elementary for a chance to pick out skis for the season. If you would like to be present as a parent, please schedule a time with Coach Kirt outside of teaching hours. The fleet of classic and skate skis are 15 total. Rentals: $25/season if you use equipment issued by Coach Kirt. You keep the skis for the winter season! Classic ski rental is provided by SB Bikes in Suttons Bay. They are reasonable and allow equipment use for multiple weeks.

Skiing groups will be decided based on ability and interest. Skiers can classic and/or skate ski. This grass roots nordic ski club at Leland is successful, thanks to the support of YOU!
