Principal's Note

Dear LPS families,

This week I’d like to notify you about our district’s Comprehensive Sexuality Education program. The Leland Board of Education has approved a Comprehensive Sexuality Education program called Rights, Respect, Responsibility: A K-12 Sexuality Education Curriculum.  In the elementary, this curriculum will be taught by classroom teachers and certified Health Education teachers.  At the secondary level, it will be taught by certified Health Education teachers.

Some of the elementary lessons have begun, and the rest of the lessons for elementary will begin soon in February.  In the secondary, the lessons will begin later in February either during scheduled Physical Education classes or Advisory.

Leland Public School acknowledges that parents/guardians are the primary sexual health educators for their child/children, and we are committed to partnering with you to provide supplementary resources to support you in this role.

Michigan parents/guardians have several rights regarding sexual health education instruction:

  • You must be notified prior to instruction on sex education and/or HIV/STI prevention.

  • You may view the lessons being taught.  To do so, you must schedule your visit at least 48 hours prior to when you want to observe the lesson.  To schedule your lesson observation, please contact Travis Baker at tbaker@lelandschool.com.

  • You may excuse your child from this instruction without penalty, often called “opting out.”  If you decide to opt your child out for some or all of the lessons, please email Travis Baker at least 48 hours prior to the lesson’s scheduled time.

Families that haven’t received notification and opt-out letters yet will receive them at least two weeks before instruction.  If you would like more information on the curriculum, please click here:

On a completely different topic, elementary families: please sign and return your purple report card envelopes! We will use these again for our end-of-year report cards.

As usual, please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions: sfehrenbach@lelandschool.com or (231) 256-3802.

"Today in the library, we celebrated a "Creature Exchange." Our Kindergarten students drew imaginative creatures in art class with Mrs. Sluiter.  Those creative drawings were given to secondary students in HS Pottery class and 8th grade art.  The older students looked at the drawings and translated them into clay creatures. This included building, carving, and glazing their pottery. The secondary students have been excited to give away their art for weeks and the littles were all smiles." - Mrs. Smith

Walkathon Fundraiser for Guatemala Trip

Description: This fundraiser is being organized to support a group of students from Leland Public School who are raising funds for a cultural and educational trip to Guatemala through the LPS World Learning Club. The goal of this walkathon is to walk the 6,000,000 steps it takes to get from Leland, MI to Guatemala City, Guatemala! As of today there are 39 days left until departure, and we’re challenging our students to walk as many steps as possible in that time.

How it Works:

  • Participants will track the number of steps they walk each day over the next 39 days.

  • Donors will pledge a certain amount per step or per mile walked.

  • Funds raised will go towards the students' travel expenses, educational activities, and community outreach in Guatemala.

We’re aiming to collectively walk 6,000,000 steps to Guatemala City, and with your support, we can reach our goal while helping the students fund their trip. Thank you for your contribution!
