Dear LPS families,

It’s a beautiful winter wonderland outside once again, though we certainly don’t appreciate winter putting a pause on our learning this week! Thank you for all the ways you support each other as a community during snow days. I love to hear about mass playdates to help working parents and adult carpools that get our teen drivers off the road when conditions are unsafe. It takes a village, and there is lots of love and care in this one!

*Edit* With the interruptions to school this week we have some schedule changes.

Our high school winter spirit week and dance will be pushed to one week later. Spirit week will start on Monday February 3rd. Our HS Snow-Co dance will be Saturday February 8th from 8 to 10pm at the school. HS students should buy tickets in advance and have any non-LPS dates approved through the office ASAP.*

"THANK YOU to all the HS Pottery students who created and donated clay bowls for the Empty Bowls event.  This year's fundraiser will be in TC on May 4th at the Howe Arena. It is a simple soup and bread dinner to raise money for the NW Food Coalition and local food pantries.  All who attend are given their choice of bowl to take home.  Donated bowls include pottery, wood, and decorative paper bowls.  You can find out more about it northwestmifoodcoalition.org. January is School Board Appreciation Month and the Leland PTO is honoring our wonderful School Board with a charcuterie board at their monthly meeting on Monday, January 27th.

If you would like to join us in thanking members of the school board please join us by donating supplies for this effort. You can bring your items to the school at 5:00pm, with the gathering starting at 5:30pm, prior to the start of the School Board’s routine meeting.

Book Club: Monday, February 3 at 7 pm in the HS Media Center

In the final section of The Anxious Generation, author Jonathan Haidt proposes a number of solutions that governments, tech companies, schools, and parents can take to combat the rising mental health crisis observed in teens and adolescents following the widespread adoption of smart phones and social media.

Join us after the February PTO meeting for a discussion about these proposed solutions and how they can be implemented in our school community. All are welcome to participate, and if you missed the last meeting, click here to view a presentation highlighting key statistics from the second section of the book. The Snow Co Dance is rescheduled to SATURDAY FEBRUARY 8th.

The snow days this week resulted in sports scheduling conflicts which have influenced a reschedule of Spirit Week and the Snow Co Dance. Everything will be pushed back ONE WEEK.

Spirit Week will start on Monday February 3rd. More details to come.

*Note* there is a basketball game rescheduled for this day as well but it is earlier in the day and players will make it back just in time to attend the dance if they wish. Because of conferences the following week impacting the ability to play spirit week games and the potential for more snow day sports rescheduling to come, the 8th remains the best available day.

Our 2025 scholarship applications are now open!

We have more than 100 scholarships available that aim to support the secondary education pursuits of graduating high school seniors, current college students, and vocational/trade school students from across the region.

Students from Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, and Leelanau County and the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians are invited to apply by completing our General Scholarship Application.

The General Application will provide students with a list of scholarships for which they may be eligible. Some scholarships may require a separate application or supplemental materials.

Student Scholarships

Cherryland offers three $4,000 ($1,000 for 4 years) college scholarships to high school seniors each year. Selection for the scholarship is based on academics, community involvement, and extracurricular activities.

Eligibility Requirements:

• Applicant’s parents or legal guardians must be a Cherryland Electric Cooperative member whose primary residence is in Cherryland’s service territory.

• Applicant must be a high school senior with a minimum grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.

• To continue to receive the scholarship, the student must maintain a minimum college course load of 12 credits per term and receive a 2.5 grade point average.
