Principal Fehrenbach’s Weekly Message

Dear LPS families,

We have one month of school under our belts, and students have settled into routines all over the district. As we move into October, I’ve been thinking a lot about student support, and I’m so proud of the ways we help our students achieve success at Leland:

• Support Staff: We have finished hiring a great team of classroom aides for lunches, recesses, and classroom help. Welcome to our newly-hired aides Jen Estrada (Ms. Jenny), Colleen Stephenson (Mrs. S), Mary Garcia (Ms. Mary) and Jeffry Staple (Mr. S). 

• Student Support Team: We have a strong student support team and a great partnership with the Benzie Leelanau District Health Department. Thanks to Mrs. Lowe, Mr. Peschel, Mrs. Glass, Mrs. Keen, Mrs. Fowler, Mrs. Sluiter, Mrs. Yoffy, Mr. Bruce, and Mrs. Proctor for their academic, behavior, and social-emotional support! 

• School Meal Program: All school lunch meals are free for all students, and we served over 8000 meals in September! Please help us: even though meals are free, we need every family to fill out the School Meal Form. We receive lots of different federal funding sources based on the completion of these forms. Please follow this link: https://leland.familyportal.cloud/ and click “Apply for Benefits.” It is a quick process!

• PTO: Our Parent-Teacher Organization is an amazing group of people working hard to support our school. Join us next week for the monthly meeting Monday at 6 pm at school, and Thursday from 6-8 pm at Good Harbor Winery for their annual Fall Social.

Please join us for a social event focused on celebrating our LPS community. Complimentary appetizers, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided. At this event we will also be kicking off our annual dues drive to raise funds for our operating costs and special programs. This event is designed to give adults an opportunity to mix and mingle without their children. If you don't have easy access to a babysitter, please bring your kids and free childcare will be provided on-site courtesy of the National Honor Society.

LPS will again offer the Crystal Mountain Ski and Snowboard Club this year beginning in January.  Some information is below, with more details to follow later. 

• Crystal Mountain will be hosting an advisor/parent meeting 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. October 6th in James Bay (where Tickets and Rental are located during the season).

• Our program day will remain Wednesday from approximately 4:30-8pm.  Flexibility based on transportation plan and chaperone/parent availability. 

• Program cost without rental was $100 -$120 with equipment rental (helmet, board/skis, boots).  Typically there has been a window for rental fitting before the program begins.  Scholarships are available.  Different (discounted) price points for chaperones and season passes.  

• The program will continue to offer free ski/snowboard lessons and we predict lesson times will remain 4:30, 5:30, and 6:30 - there will be an app to sign up for lesson times.

• Enrollment paperwork and payment will be due in November.

• Early assessment and placement will be offered in December.

• There will be a program participation meal discount (last year it made the meal $10)

• There will be a school bus transportation plan and family transportation/carpooling is allowed/encouraged.

Leland Public School

Students in grades 1-12 will participate in brief (~5 mins) surveys as part of our participation in the Move this World SEL curriculum supported by the ISD.

The SSIS Brief + Mental Health Scales are short rating scales that are completed by a student and their teacher. Each assessment takes between 5 and 8 minutes to complete. The focus of the scales is a student’s social emotional learning (SEL) (including self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making) and emotional behavioral concern (internalizing and externalizing). The purpose of these online assessments is as a universal screener given to all students that will identify areas of strength and emotional behavioral concerns in order to inform teachers and school leaders in planning SEL instructional and programmatic supports for students.

This measure of students' social and emotional functioning is aligned with State of Michigan Social Emotional Learning standards and provides results used to guide strength-focused instruction for all students and potentially preventive support for any students experiencing emotional behavior concerns. This brief rating scale is not a comprehensive diagnostic measure for classification of disorders. Rather, it is meant to efficiently “check-in” to help us better understand how our students are functioning, how effective our programming is, and how we can better meet the needs of all students.

The screening provides information about a student’s current functioning levels. The social emotional functioning associated with each level can always be improved and thus change over time. Periodic re-screening can be used to continue to monitor students’ progress.

All SSIS SEL Brief Scales are designed to be used by educational professionals and students within Multi-Tiered Systems of Support for the purposes of:

Screening groups of students to identify their overall SEL competency level and emotional behavior health status,

Identifying students’ SEL strengths and individual students with possible emotional behavior concerns,

Planning which SSIS SEL CIP skill units to teach for improving students’ skills,

Monitoring change in students’ SEL skills over time and possible emotional behavior concerns to determine if additional assessment and intervention support are needed,

Evaluating the effects of intervention programs on students’ level of SEL skills and emotional behavior concerns.

Rotary International Youth Exchange

Recently members of the Leelanau County/Suttons Bay Rotary Club presented exchange opportunities to Sophomores and Juniors.  The program is a full year academic and cultural experience.  Selected students would prepare for the exchange experience over this school year before departing next August to their destination country.  

This is a Rotary International program that matches Rotary Clubs from the United States with Rotary Clubs abroad.  Students will live with 2-3 host families and attend school in the host country for a full academic year.  There is a cost for this program.  Scholarship funds may be available through the local Rotary club.  Students will experience a variety of exposures to a different culture while becoming a global individual.  The Rotary International Youth Exchange promotes international understanding and goodwill one person at a time.

The Leelanau County Parks and Recreation Commission is inviting community members to provide input on a proposed update to its five-year Parks and Recreation Master Plan.

This update builds on previous parks master planning and engagement efforts to align with the needs of our community. It identifies community recreation and open space needs and sets an action plan for the next five years to make necessary enhancements to our parks, trails, recreational programming and facilities as our community grows.

The survey will be available until October 4, 2024.
