"ArtPrize 2024 was filled with dynamic artwork and many hands-on experiences. First, thank you again to LEF for financially supporting our field trip, allowing 50 LPS artists to experience this international art competition. Students had a variety of adventures, from stumbling into the GR Hispanic Festival to trying out the new Sharpie brand paint pens.  One highlight of the trip was an artist who was drawing portraits of visitors outside the Ford Museum. He drew the portraits in only 10 minutes, took a photo of it, then gifted it to the visitor. The collection of portraits will become an ArtPrize entry. Several LPS students sat for their portrait. The Leland Girl's Cross Country Team represented the Comets in strong finishes this past weekend at the Logger Invitational in Boyne Falls. The team made up of Ella Knudsen (1st), Sophie Grinage (3rd), Natalie Burpee (7th), Lorna Wiesen (17th), and Alyssa Korson (26th) finished first overall! Way to go Comets!

The School Farmers Market visited LPS on Tuesday!

"Monday, we started Leland Public Spy School (LPSS). The goal is to have all students move through the school silently, spy like.

For 8 weeks we will have different activities for the students to participate in and earn points.

Each class was given 25 points (beads), these points can be taken away or, they can earn extra points for extraordinary behavior or acts.

Each week they will also have to decode a password to get into certain classrooms.

There are a lot of fun activities planned for the next 8 weeks and at the end, the class that has accumulated the most points will win a “candy salad”."

Dear LPS families,

We had a great Spirit Week this week! We saw so many creative outfits, (not)backpacks, and games. Don’t forget to join us for our Homecoming Soccer Game on Saturday at 1:30! 

I want to take a minute to remind families about our extra-curricular attendance policies, which are part of our Student Handbook and our Athletic Code of Conduct in Final Forms: Students must attend school for a full day to be eligible to practice or play in an extracurricular activity after school. They also must attend the following school day. Our students are expected to be students first, and extracurriculars are dependent upon school commitment and success.

We had a great start to Comet Club, our daily before/after school enrichment program. If you’d like to sign your student up, there are some open slots! Details and sign-up are available at https://tinyurl.com/CometClub. Comet Club includes 15-20 minutes in both am and pm sessions for targeted academic practice.

The Library Staff is thrilled to welcome back all of our students.

We have lots of new books to share with the school community's readers and have greeted all of the K-8 students with Library orientation so they are empowered to use the library for researching, reading, and studying all throughout this school year. 

We still have a large number of books checked out last year that have not been returned. Overdue notices will be sent to the families of elementary students and directly to secondary students weekly beginning Friday afternoon. Please let me know if you have any questions.

The Leelanau County Parks and Recreation Commission is inviting community members to provide input on a proposed update to its five-year Parks and Recreation Master Plan.

This update builds on previous parks master planning and engagement efforts to align with the needs of our community. It identifies community recreation and open space needs and sets an action plan for the next five years to make necessary enhancements to our parks, trails, recreational programming and facilities as our community grows.
